There could not have been a better representation to honor the first-ever Nebraska Mr. Football Award, which is meant to be the Cornhusker State’s version of the high school football Heisman Trophy. In its inaugural year, Rezac was named the unofficial Nebraska high school football player of the year by The Jet Award Foundation. Without a lot of deliberation, Rezac is named the 2023 NEBHSFB.com Player of the Year.
This was not a difficult decision. Whether its his leadership on the field of play or his commitment to excellence in the classroom and the in community, Rezac checks all the boxes.
The NEBHSFB Preseason Player of the Year went 35-2 as a starter over his career resulting in back-to-back state championships. As a senior in an unbeaten season, Rezac completed 73.4 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,316 yards and 30 touchdowns while tacking on another 905 yards and 15 scores on the ground. For his career, Rezac threw for 5,776 yards and 68 touchdowns, adding 2,270 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. Rezac broke North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton’s school record for total offense after taking over the starting job midway through his sophomore campaign.
Westside’s success was largely down to its program and its entire body of work, but having Rezac leading the charge definitely made things a lot easier.
For the moment and unless a high-profile Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program undergoes a drastic change of philosophy before now and the February 2024 National Signing Day, the signal calling Rezac is slated to follow his twin brother and defensive back prospect Teddy to Notre Dame as a preferred walk-on. For 132 other FBS programs, it will be their loss.
For his efforts, Rezac was named an Honorary Co-Captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-State and Lincoln Journal-Star Super State teams along with teammate and Nebraska commit Caleb Benning while also picking up honors from NebPreps Iron Mike’s, 1000-yard Guy Nebraska sports writing legend Bobby Mills, and Huskerland Prep Report.
On January 3, 2024, Rezac was named Gatorade Nebraska Player of the Year for 2023.
