Waverly 42, Gretna East 27

Waverly claimed its first state football championship since 1980 with a 42-27 victory over Gretna Eat at Memorial Stadium in Lincon on November 24, 2025.

With 1:53 left in the game, Axmann busted free on a 53-yard touchdown run to seal Waverly’s unbeaten season. On 41 carries, Axmann rushed for 277 yards and three touchdown runs and proved to be a decisive factor. Junior quarterback Brockston Teply threw for 138 yards and two scores in the victory.

After a three-and-out from Gretna East on the first possession of the game, Waverly turned it right back over on its first offensive play. In the second quarter, Waverly took over. McMillan reached the end zone with a 15-yard touchdown run before Teply’s second touchdown strike of the game went to Connor Schere. With 4:23 remaining in the second quarter, Nathan Axmann scored on an 18-yard touchdown run to make it 28 unanswered points thanks to Gavin Fowler’s four point after attempts in Waverly’s offensive onslaught.

For Gretna East, junior quarterback Chase Grow threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns. The difference in the game was Griffins running back Connor Sams being held to 111 yards on only 11 carries as the Griffins found itself behind in the second quarter.
