Somebody was going to win its first state championship in program history on Friday night in Kearney. When the dust settled on an exciting Six-Man season, Garden County outlasted Southwest to claim its first state championship in program history with a 41-22 victory over Southwest at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.

All-State candidate Houston Billeter of Southwest came into the championship game nursing a shoulder injury. In the first quarter, Garden County quarterback Kole Fornander also suffered an injury in the first quarter of the title game. After that point, it was anybody’s gues

After Kyan Kramer flipped the ball forward to Javis Underwood on a busted play for a 42-yard touchdown to open the scoring, the Eagles continued the momentum after its spectacular play. Kramer also rushed for a score in the victory for the Eagles.

In the beginning of the second quarter, Billeter and Deric Kelley drove the Roughriders down the field and hooked up for a 3-yard touchdown strike to provide a spark making matters interesting. After a PAT failed, Southwest trailed 13-6.

Lobner ran for touchdowns of 31 and 41 yards to put the Eagles before Kramer busted off a 70-yard run to claim a 33-6 lead at halftime. At intermission, Lobner rushed for 101 yards on nine carries with three rushing scores. The second quarter dominance by the Eagles was the major difference. Lobner would finish with 105 yards and two touchdown runs while also intercepting two passes in the victory.

Billeter finished with 257 passing yards and three touchdowns, but his three interceptions proved costly. Deric Kelley caught 11 passes for 87 yards and a score in a losing effort.
