NEBHSFB.com Top 10: Week 5
Week 5 Top Performers (All Classes)

Class A (Rank/School/Record/PRV/Week 6 Opponent)

  1. Millard South | 4-1 | 1 – at Papillion-La Vista
  2. Elkhorn South | 5-0 | 3 – at Omaha Burke (Thurs.)
  3. Creighton Prep | 5-0 | 4– vs. No. 6 Omaha Central
  4. Omaha Westside | 4-1 | 2 – at Fremont
  5. Omaha North | 3-2 | 5 – vs. Omaha Buena Vista
  6. Omaha Central | 4-1 | 6 – at No. 3 Creighton Prep
  7. Papillion-La Vista South | 4-1 | 8 – at No. 10 Kearney
  8. Bellevue West | 2-3 | 9 – vs. South Sioux City
  9. Lincoln East | 4-1 | OLI – at Millard North
  10. Kearney | 3-2 | 7 – vs. No. 7 Papio South

Dropped Out:
Papillion-La Vista | 3-2 | 10 – vs. No. 1 Millard South

OLI:
Columbus | 4-1 | OLI – vs. Omaha Bryan
Millard West | 2-3 | NR – at Bellevue East

Comments: Well, here we go. Omaha Westside beat Omaha North, who beat Omaha Central and Papio South. Omaha Central beat Omaha Westside in its biggest win in a really long time, handing Westside’s its first home loss since 2019. Kearney beat Omaha North 14-13 with 132 total yards, but lost to Lincoln East. Papio South has rolled in its four wins this season with its only loss coming by six points to Omaha North. Perhaps Lincoln East was underrated all season after losing its opener to No. 2 Elkhorn South. It is hard to explain putting a team like Westside behind a team that it beat by 31, just as it is hard to move Central over a team that it lost to by 31 points in North. Omaha Westside’s track record deserves some understanding, so it drops to No. 4. North stays at No. 5, Central sticks as No. 6 despite its impressive win over Westside. Papio South is at No. 7, while Bellevue West, Lincoln East, and Kearney round out the Top 10. Yes, the Central win over Westside and the Kearney win over Omaha North happened, but it’s hard to decipher anything between these teams. Omaha Central can beat anybody from No. 2 below on any given night. This week’s matchup with No. 3 Creighton Prep is interesting.

Class B

  1. Elkhorn North | 5-0 | 1 – vs. Elkhorn
  2. Waverly | 5-0 | 2 – at Beatrice
  3. Norris | 5-0 | 3 – at Lincoln Standing Bear
  4. Bennington | 4-1 | 4 – vs. Blair
  5. Gretna East | 4-1 | 5 – vs. Platteview
  6. Skutt Catholic | 4-1 | 6 – vs. Lincoln Pius X
  7. Seward | 3-2 | 7 – vs. Northwest (GI)
  8. Scottsbluff | 4-1 | 8 – at Gering
  9. Gretna | 2-3 | 9 – vs. Plattsmouth
  10. McCook | 4-1 | 10 – at Hastings

OLI:
Gering | 4-1 | OLI – vs. No. 8 Scottsbluff

Comments: Expect Week 6 to be rather drama-free. There are no changes this week despite Gretna’s loss to No. 4 Bennington. Gretna’s losses are to No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 this season and has an explosive offense that will keep the Dragons in a lot of games. Gering, who has been on the Outside Looking In (OLI) since the preseason, gets a shot at No. 8 Scottsbluff this week after falling in Week 5 to No. 10 McCook. Gering has not beaten Scottsbluff since 2009.

Class C-1

  1. Wahoo | 5-0 | 1 – vs. No. 7 Mount Michael
  2. Central City | 5-0 | 2 – at Lincoln Christian
  3. Ashland-Greenwood | 4-1 | 3 – vs. Boys Town
  4. Columbus Lakeview | 5-0 | 4 – at Wayne
  5. Sidney | 5-0 | 5 – at Ogallala
  6. O’Neill | 5-0 | 6 – vs. No. 9 Pierce
  7. Mount Michael | 4-1 | 8 – at No. 1 Wahoo
  8. Fort Calhoun | 4-1 | 7 – vs. Logan View/Scribner-Snyder
  9. Pierce | 4-1 | 9 – at No. 6 O’Neill
  10. Syracuse | 5-0 | 10 – at Nebraska City

OLI:
Aurora | 2-3 | OLI – at Adams Central
Gothenburg | 4-1 | OLI – vs. Cozad
Milford | 4-1 | OLI – vs. Minden

Comments: The only change is that No. 7 Mount Michael and No. 8 Fort Calhoun swapped after Mount Michael defeated the Pioneers in Week 5. In Week 4, Fort Calhoun beat No. 9 Pierce and remains above the Bluejays. Unbeaten Syracuse remains at No. 10. The Rockets have a shot to run the table in the regular season as their last four games come against teams with a combined 4-16 record.

Class C-2

  1. Bishop Neumann | 5-0 | 1 – vs. Malcolm
  2. Norfolk Catholic | 4-1 | 2 – vs. No. 10 West Point-Beemer
  3. Cedar Catholic | 5-0 | 3 – at Battle Creek
  4. Kearney Catholic | 5-0 | 4 – vs. Gordon-Rushville
  5. Grand Island Central Catholic | 5-0 | 5 – at No. 8 Ord
  6. Boone Central | 3-2 | 6 – at Centura
  7. Archbishop Bergan | 4-1 | 8 – at Aquinas Catholic
  8. Ord | 2-3 | 8 – vs. No. 5 Grand Island CC
  9. Doniphan-Trumbull | 4-1 | 9 – at Superior
  10. West Point-Beemer | 3-2 | 10 – at No. 2 Norfolk Catholic

OLI:
Lincoln Lutheran | 4-1 | NR – at Conestoga
Malcolm | 3-2 | OLI – at No. 1 Bishop Neumann
Wood River | 4-1 | NR – vs. Fillmore Central

Comments There is no reason to move West Point-Beemer out of the Top 10 with losses to No. 1 Bishop Neumann and No. 3 Cedar Catholic this season. To finish its gauntlet against top three teams, the Cadets get No. 2 Norfolk Catholic in Week 6. No. 5 Grand Island Central Catholic takes on No. 8 Ord this week in one of the biggest games statewide regardless of classification.

Class D-1

  1. Shelby-Rising City | 5-0 | 1 – vs. East Butler
  2. Dundy County-Stratton | 5-0 | 2 – at North Platte St. Patrick’s
  3. Sandy Creek | 4-1 | 3 –at No. 9 Sutton
  4. Wausa/Osmond | 5-0 | OLI – at Hartington-Newcastle
  5. Thayer Central | 4-1 | 5 – at Southern
  6. Bloomfield | 4-1 | 6 – vs. Boyd County
  7. Crofton | 3-2 | 7 – at Niobrara/Verdigre

  9. Sutton | 4-1 | 9 – vs. No. 3 Sandy Creek
  10. Lourdes Central Catholic | 4-1 | 10 – at Weeping Water

Dropped Out:
Hartington/Newcastle | 4-1 | 4 – vs. No. 4 Wausa-Osmond

OLI:
Arcadia-Loup City | 5-0 | NR – at Ravenna
Bridgeport | 4-1 | OLI – at Morrill
Hemingford | 5-0 | OLI – at Sutherland (Thurs.)
McCool Junction | 4-1 | OLI – at Heartland
North Platte St. Patrick’s | 4-1 | OLI – vs. Dundy County-Stratton
Pender | 4–1 | OLI– at Guardian Angels Central Catholic
Ravenna | 5-0 | OLI – vs. Arcadia-Loup City

Comments: Wausa/Osmond debuts at No. 4 after a 36-22 win over No. 6 Bloomfield. Thayer Central stays put at No 5 despite a loss to No. 3 Sandy Creek. Hartington/Newcastle tumbles out after a loss to No. 7 Crofton, 52-30. The Wildcats get a shot at another Top 10 team in Week 6 as it takes on No. 4 Wausa/Osmond. Should an upset happen, we will deal with this again a week from now.

Class D-2

  1. Archangels Catholic | 5-0 | 1 – vs. Osceola
  2. Howells-Dodge | 5-0 | 2 – at Riverside
  3. Wynot | 4-1 | 3 – at Lyons-Decatur Northeast
  4. St. Mary’s | 5-0 | 4 – vs. Elgin/Pope John
  5. Central Valley | 5-0 | 5 – at Twin Loup
  6. Lawrence-Nelson | 4-1 | 6 – at Nebraska Lutheran
  7. Hitchcock County | 5-0 | 7 – vs. No. 10 Loomis
  8. Mullen | 5-0 | 8 – at Maxwell
  9. Anselmo-Merna | 4-1 | 10 –at Burwell
  10. Loomis | 4-1 | OLI – at No. 7 Hitchcock County

Dropped Out:
Cambridge | 4-1 | 9 – at Maywood-Hayes Center

OLI:
Deshler | 4-1 | OLI – at BDS
Elgin/Pope John | 4-1 | NR – at No. 4 St. Mary’s
Elmwood-Murdock | 4-1 | OLI – at Falls City Sacred Heart
Neligh-Oakdale | 5-0 | OLI – vs. Creighton
Overton | 3-2 | OLI – vs. Bertrand
Twin Loup | 4-1 | OLI – vs. No. 5 Central Valley

Comments: Loomis is back in at No. 10 after smacking previous No. 9 Cambridge, 66-38, immediately proving this writer wrong for moving Loomis out for no reason the week before. Sometimes, the author gets decisions wrong. For defending state champion Central Valley, its Week 6 battle with Twin Loup could be interesting. Twin Loup’s only loss of the season is to No. 4 St. Mary’s in the opener, 18-13.

Class D-6

  1. Garden County | 5-0 | 1 – vs. Potter-Dix (Thurs.)
  2. Stuart | 4-1 | 2 – Idle
  3. Red Cloud | 4-0 | 3 – vs. Harvard
  4. S-E-M | 3-1 | 4 – vs. Wauneta-Palisade
  5. Silver Lake | 3-1 | 5 – at Dorchester
  6. Leyton | 4-0 | 6 – at Creek Valley
  7. Southwest | 4-0 | 7 – at Medicine Valley
  8. Hampton | 4-0 | 9 – vs. Shelton
  9. Wallace | 3-1 | 8 – vs. Paxton
  10. Pawnee City | 3-1 | 10 – at Lewiston

OLI:
Arthur County | 2-2 | NR – at Cody-Kilgore
Wauneta-Palisade | 4-0 | OLI – at No. 4 S-E-M (Thurs.)

Comments: Due to its Thursday night and Friday afternoon kickoff times, it is rather easy to get some eyes on almost every team in Class D-6. Wallace falls one spot to No. 9 after a 45-30 loss to No. 7 Southwest. Six teams remain unbeaten, including Wauneta-Palisade. Wauneta-Palisade has a prove-it game in Week 6 with No. 4 S-E-M to start a tough stretch that will include games with No. 7 Southwest and No. 9 Wallace.
