Comments: Millard South traveled to Las Vegas and pummeled Arbor View 49-7 to open its defense of the Class A state championship. Alabama pledge Jett Thomalla picked up where he left off after a record setting season as a junior, throwing for five touchdown strikes. Omaha North remains at No. 3 this week despite a loss to second-ranked Omaha Westside. Omaha North still has a lot to like. Omaha Central survived a huge test with No. 6 Bellevue West, winning 29-28 on a late field goal. One of the bigger surprises of Week 1 came when Millard West defeated rival Millard South, 23-12. The Wildcats debut at No. 8, while the Mustangs crash out of the Top 10 to make room for the new No. 10. Creighton Prep enters at No. 10 after a win over defending Missouri Class 6 state champion DeSmet Jesuit. We will choose a wait and see approach with the Junior Jays as DeSmet lost a lot from last season’s state championship team. It was definitely impressive, however.

Comments: The biggest shocker of Week 1 in Class B was Norris’ take down of defending Class B champion Omaha Skutt Catholic, 49-3. If you want to write off Skutt Catholic, you should probably know better. For Norris, it was an impressive debut victory for new head coach Trevor Sedlacek. Norris jumps to fourth with the Skyhawks falling to No. 8. There will be a few intriguing matchups in Class B for Week 2 with three games between ranked teams. Gretna East’s visit to No. 6 Bennington may arguably be the headliner. It will be interesting to see if Gretna East can take the next step against one of the perennial Class B powers. It might be ready to do so. A darkhorse in Class B perhaps may be Lincoln Standing Bear. After losing its first seven varsity football games, a 24-21 overtime win over Blair extend the Grizzlies streak to three straight wins.

Lincoln Christian | 0-1 | 9 – Friday at Wilber-Clatonia
OLI:

Boys Town | 1-0 | NR – Friday at Syracuse
Cozad | 0-1 | OLI – Friday vs. No. 2 Central City
Fort Calhoun | 1-0 | OLI – Friday at No. 9 Omaha Roncalli Catholic
Comments: You ought to get tickets for top-ranked Wahoo’s visit to No. 3 Ashland-Greenwood early. Ashland-Greenwood loves itself some Ashland-Greenwood, which is one of the better high school football experiences in Nebraska you can ask for according to many experts. The matchup with defending state champion Wahoo is arguably the best 11-man Week 2 game in the state. Pierce got off to a solid early start with a close victory over Aurora. Don’t write off the Huskies just yet. Expect parity to reign in Class C-1 this season from No. 6 and below. There will be a lot of moving parts throughout the campaign.Class C-1 is very top-heavy. Boys Town and Fort Calhoun rolled in Week 1 and are now on the Outside Looking In (OLI).
Class C-2

Dropped Out:
Battle Creek | 0-1 | 5 – Friday vs. Aquinas Catholic
OLI:
Malcolm | 1-0 | OLI – Friday vs. No. 9 GI Central Catholic
Cross County | 1-0 | NR – Friday at Gibbon
Lincoln Lutheran | 1-0 | OLI – Friday vs. Auburn
Wood River | 1-0 | OLI – Thursday vs. Hershey
Comments: Three-time defending state champion Norfolk Catholic saw its 39-game winning streak snapped with a season opening loss to new No. 1 Wahoo Neumann. Battle Creek, who opened the preseason ratings at No. 5, fell out after a 35-14 loss to Cross County. The demotion is perhaps harsh to Battle Creek, who features a young roster who needs a few games to get settled. Watch this space in late October. Unfortunately for Battle Creek, northeast Nebraska high school football tends to produce tough schedules.
Note: We (full disclosure, there is no “we”) are going to do something a little different this year on Tuesday’s that talks more about our friends in eight and six man and the Top Performers for those classes. It is untitled as of this time. The Farm Report or is that going to alienate the Nebraska ranchers? Submit ideas, please.
