Nebraska HS Football: Week 6 Top 10, Comments
Class A
- Omaha Westside | 6-0 | 1
- Millard South | 5-1 | 2
- Elkhorn South | 6-0 | 3
- Kearney | 5-1 | 4
- Omaha North | 4-2 | 5
- Millard North | 4-2 | 6
- Papillion-La Vista | 5-1 | 7
- Bellevue West | 4-2 | 9
- Omaha Central | 3-3 | NR
- Creighton Prep | 3-3 | 8
Dropped Out: Lincoln Southeast (10)
OLI: Lincoln East (3-3), Lincoln North Star (4-2), Millard West (2-4), Papio South (2-4)
Comments: Unfortunately, Lincoln Southeast dropped out this week even with a win over Lincoln High due to a loss to Creighton Prep head-to-head in Week 3. Omaha Central enters at No. 9 this week after its win over No. 10 Creighton Prep, who falls two spots. We will find out a lot more about No. 3 Elkhorn South as it takes on top-ranked Omaha Westside and its 26-game winning streak in Week 7. As you were with No. 7 Papillion-La Vista, who hung with No. 2 Millard South in the first half before the Patriots did their thing in the second half. Many in the Top 10 have seen what a warm weather Millard South offense can produce. What an offense.
Class B
- Bennington | 6-0 | 1
- Omaha Skutt | 6-0 | 2
- Seward | 6-0 | 4
- Waverly | 4-2 | 5
- Norris | 4-2 | 6
- Elkhorn North | 5-1 | 3
- Scottsbluff | 5-1 | 7
- York | 5-1 | 8
- Elkhorn | 3-3 | NR
- Hastings | 4-2 | NR
Dropped Out: Lincoln Pius X (9), Blair (10)
OLI: Gretna (3-3), Gretna East (3-3)
Comments: Beyond logic at this point as there is no way to real way to make this make sense. Bennington has won 45 straight. The Badgers will remain atop the Class B Top 10 until somebody can defeat them head-to-head. Omaha Skutt and quarterback Dylan Van Dyke will get its Week 8 shot at the top-ranked and the three-time defending state champion Badgers. Elkhorn North hangs on at No. 6 despite a loss to No. 9 Elkhorn, which literally makes no sense. After Week 6, you need to look at the six-week body of work. With the Antlers win, it even throws the “District of Death” (District B-1) into more chaos. You feel sorry for Blair, who drops out from No. 10 this week despite its impressive win over Gretna earlier in the campaign. To think Blair will be on the outside looking in of a postseason berth is unfortunate, but that is how it is looking at this point with just three weeks left in the season. The Bears finish the season with No, 3 Seward, Elkhorn, and No. 2 Omaha Skutt. Blair’s schedule was brutal. Hastings is in at No. 10.
Class C-1
- Wahoo | 6-0 | 1
- Ashland-Greenwood | 5-1 | 2
- Sidney | 6-0 | 3
- Columbus Lakeview |6-0 | 4
- Boys Town | 5-1 | 5
- Cozad | 5-1 | 6
- Auburn | 5-1 | 7
- Central City | 5-1 | 8
- Fort Calhoun | 5-1 | 10
- Columbus Scotus | 5-1 | NR
Dropped Out: Lincoln Christian (9)
OLI: Chadron (6-0), O’Neill (6-0), Omaha Roncalli (4-2)
Comments: With a two-point “playoff-like” home loss to Ashland-Greenwood (according to the Harvest Sports newsletter), Boys Town remains the second-best of the one-loss teams behind the second-ranked Bluejays. Perhaps harshly after a 52-50 loss to No. 8 Central City, Lincoln Christian falls out this week from No. 9. This was in order to make room for a very dangerous Columbus Scotus team led by junior quarterback Carson Wessel. Wessel is the real deal. Unfortunately to make the Shamrocks part of the Top 10, unbeaten Chadron and O’Neill remain on the outside looking in despite a 6-0 record. This is not negative western and northern Nebraska bias. It is a strength of schedule issue.
Class C-2
- Norfolk Catholic | 6-0 | 1
- Wahoo Neumann | 5-1 | 2
- Cedar Catholic | 5-1 | 6
- Battle Creek | 5-1 | 3
- Oakland-Craig | 5-1 | 4
- Boone Central | 4-2 | 5
- Raymond Central | 6-0 | 8
- Kearney Catholic | 6-0 | 9
- Malcolm | 4-2 | 7
- GI Central Catholic | 5-1 | 10
Dropped Out: None
OLI: David City Aquinas (3-3), Doniphan-Trumbull (5-1), Wood River (5-1), Yutan (3-3)
Comments: Norfolk Catholic, winners of 32 straight games, does not look as if it will be tested for the third straight season until deep into the playoffs. Wahoo Neumann remains the clear No. 2 with its only blemish coming in Week 1 at the hands of Norfolk Catholic. This is where it gets confusing, but will likely sort itself out in the coming weeks. Cedar Catholic is at No. 3 due to a recent win over No. 4 Battle Creek in Week 6. Cedar Catholic’s only loss is to No. 6 Boone Central in Week 1. Oakland-Craig slides down one to No. 5 to make room for Cedar Catholic as the Knights lost to Battle Creek in Week 5. No. 6 Boone Central has losses to top-ranked Norfolk Catholic and No. 4 Battle Creek and looks like it could win out. Malcolm drops two spots to No. 9 and remain ahead of No. 10 Grand Island Central Catholic due to a head-to-head victory.
Class D-1
- Stanton | 6-0 | 1
- Sandy Creek | 6-0 | 2
- Arapahoe | 6-0 | 4
- Summerland | 5-1 | 5
- Crofton | 5-1 | 6
- Shelby-Rising City | 5-1 | 7
- Pleasanton | 6-0 | 8
- West Point GACC | 6-0 | 9
- Dundy County-Stratton | 5-1 | 10
- North Platte St. Patrick’s | 5-1 | 3
Dropped Out: None
OLI: David City (6-0), E-M-F (4-2), Hartington/Newcastle (5-1), Johnson-Brock (5-1), Nebraska City Lourdes (5-1), Ravenna (5-1), Plainview (4-2)
Comments: North Platte St. Patrick’s falls from No. 3 to No. 10 after falling to No. 9 Dundy County-Stratton in Week 6. Pleasanton passed the eye test with a Week 6 victory over South Loup. There are a lot of teams listed in the Outside Looking In that will have a say in the playoffs. You could argue that every single one of them could feature in the Top 10.
Class D-2
- Sandhills-Thedford | 6-0 | 1
- Central Valley | 5-1 | 2
- Humphrey Archangels | 6-0 | 4
- BDS | 6-0 | 5
- Loomis | 6-0 | 6
- Overton | 5-0 | 7
- Riverside | 4-2 | 10
- Howells-Dodge | 5-1 | 3
- Bancroft-Rosalie | 6-0 | NR
- Wynot | 4-2 | NR
Dropped Out: Weeping Water (8), Hitchcock County (10)
OLI: Creighton (5-1), Fullerton (5-1), High Plains (4-2), Lawrence-Nelson (4-2), Mullen (5-1)
Comments: Weeping Water and Hitchcock County fall out after Week 6 losses. Bancroft-Rosalie enters at No. 9 with its unbeaten record, while Wynot sneaks in a No. 10 and gets in basically because of a head-to-head win over Creighton, who is 5-1.
Class D-6
- Sumner-Eddyville-Miller | 5-0 | 1
- Pawnee City | 5-0 | 2 *
- Arthur County | 5-0 | 3
- Stuart | 4-1 | 4
- Red Cloud | 5-0 | 5
- Hay Springs | 5-0 | 6
- Hampton | 4-1 | 7
- Diller-Odell | 4-1 | 8
- Silver Lake | 4-1 | 9
- Garden County | 5-0 | 10
Dropped Out: None
OLI: Leyton (4-1), Wallace (4-1)
Comments: Class D-6 has been one of the best classes to follow with 12 schools holding a 4-1 record or better. It has been sad to see the situation with low participation numbers for certain schools dressing seven or eight players in games. Give those coaches and kids a ton of credit to avoid forfeits. There was a game last week, for example, that was 4-on-4 at the end. For a period of time, one team was playing five on defense with two on the bench.
