Sandhills/Thedford’s route to its first state football title in program history was pretty straight forward. Quarterback Kyle Cox ran, ran, and ran again into the record books in the Class D-2 state championship game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on November 20 as Sandhills/Thedford defeated Wynot, 50-12.
Carrying the football on all but five offensive plays for Sandhills/Thedford, Cox rushed for 486 yards and six touchdowns on 65 carries.
Cox broke the Class D-2 single game playoff record of 451 yards set in 2014 by Maxwell’sJaylon Sturdivant against Medicine Valley. Cox also broke the all-time record for rushing yards in a single playoff with 1,436 yards. The previous D-2 record was held by Tyson Denkert of Kenesaw, who rushed for 1,267 yards during the 2021 playoffs. For the season, Cox rushed for 2,900 yards and 55 touchdowns..
As expected, Cox was a major factor in the game. As Sandhills/Thedford rolled to a 22-6 halftime lead, Cox logged a carry on all but three offensive plays, rushing for 245 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. The Sandhills/Thedford defense held the high-scoring Blue Devils to 95 total yards in the first half, just 50 through the air.
Dylan Heine threw for 127 yards and a touchdown for Wynot, who finished the season at 12-1. Wieseler caught six passes for 77 yards.
