Sumner-Eddyville-Miller 21, Hay Springs 20

Sumner-Eddyville-Miller took home its first football state championship in school history with a 21-20 victory over Hay Springs at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster FIeld in Kearney on Friday, November 17.

Maddux Jones rushed for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns as S-E-M ran the table to finish the season with an unblemished record. With the score deadlocked in the fourth quarter with 4:12 remaining, Jones busted free on a 30-yard touchdown run to give S-E-M the lead. Chance Daake found Jones on a successful point after try to give the Mustangs all the points it would need.

Gage Mintken rushed for 193 tough yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort for Hay Springs, who finished the season at 8-4. Mintken’s final scoring run of the game came from 21 yards out with :41 remaining to give the Hawks a chance to win it, but the point after attempt failed. Mintken also scored on runs of 50 and 3 yards in the third quarter.

Jones also led the defensive effort the Hawks with 15 tackles.
