NEBHSFB.com Top 10 (Week 2)

Class A

  1. Omaha Westside (2-0) 1
  2. Millard South (2-0) 5
  3. Millard West (1-1) NR
  4. Omaha North (1-1) 3
  5. Bellevue West (2-1) 4
  6. Kearney (2-0) 6
  7. Gretna (2-0) 7
  8. Papillion-La Vista (2-0) 8
  9. Elkhorn South (1-1) 2
  10. Papillion-La Vista South (2-1) 9
    Dropped Out
    Grand Island (1-1) 10
    OLI
    Lincoln East (1-1)
    Lincoln North Star (2-0)
    Millard North (0-2)
    Omaha Central (1-1)
    Omaha Creighton Prep (1-2)
Note: Norfolk, Omaha Bryan, and South Sioux City are all (2-0).

Comments: The now former policy of not moving teams into the Top 10 after a loss backfired. Millard West, who obviously should have been into begin with and especially after a one-point loss to Millard South to open the season, debuts at No. 3 after a win over Omaha North. Brody Peterson provides senior leadership for the Wildcats, who are outstanding up front and going to be a difficult task in District A-6. Millard West was a definite miss we have to own at this point. Elkhorn South falls all the way to No. 9 with a very bright future ahead. The sky is not falling for Elkhorn South. won had won 18 straight regular season games before falling to No. 2 Millard South, 33-0.

Class B

  1. Bennington (2-0) 1
  2. Elkhorn North (2-0) 2
  3. Scottsbluff (2-0) 3
  4. Omaha Skutt (1-1) 4
  5. Waverly (2-0) 5
  6. York (2-0) 6
  7. Omaha Gross (2-0) 7
  8. Elkhorn (1-1) 8
  9. Plattsmouth (1-1) 9
  10. Seward (2-0) 10
    Dropped Out
    None
    OLI
    Norris (1-2)
    Lincoln Pius X (2-1)
    Note: Ralston (2-0)

Comments: As you were with only one team from the Top 10 losing in Week 2 (No. 9 Plattsmouth to No. 1 Bennington). Class B is very wide open. Scottsbluff getting a win over a North Platte team with a deceiving record was impressive. North Platte’s other two losses were to good Class A teams. Perhaps the most impressive team so far this season has been No. 5 Waverly. No. 10 Seward remains intriguing, reloaded with talented underclassmen worthy of more ink.

Class C-1

  1. Boone Central (2-0) 1
  2. Omaha Roncalli (2-0) 5
  3. Wahoo (2-0) 6
  4. Ashland-Greenwood (1-1) 2
  5. Aurora (1-1) 4
  6. Gothenburg (2-0) NR
  7. McCook (1-1) 3
  8. Adams Central (2-0) 7
  9. Minden (1-1) 8
  10. Pierce (1-1) 9
    Dropped Out
    Douglas County West (2-0) 10
    OLI
    Auburn (2-0)
    Broken Bow (1-1)
    Chadron (2-0)
    Columbus Lakeview (1-1)
    Columbus Scotus (1-1)
    Sidney (2-0)
    Note: Syracuse is also (2-0)

Comments: When doing the preseason ratings in Class C-1, the feeling was that Boone Central was ahead of the pack by quite a bit to kick off the 2023 season. That appears to be the case, but it is very early. No. 8 Adams Central has given up six total points in two wins. Douglas County West, 38-14 winners over Wayne in Week 2, harshly falls out of the Top 10 to make room for Gothenburg’s debut at No. 6 after a win over preseason No. 3 McCook. If you are looking for somebody to make that make sense, it’s difficult to do. Douglas County West’s has been fantastic thus far, hoping to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2007 and second since Valley and Waterloo merged.

Class C-2

  1. Norfolk Catholic (2-0) 2
  2. Wahoo Neumann (2-0) 3
  3. Battle Creek (2-0) 4
  4. Oakland-Craig (1-1) 5
  5. Ord (1-1) 1
  6. Hastings St. Cecilia (2-0) 6
  7. Malcolm (2-0) 7
  8. Cedar Catholic (2-0) 8
  9. Fillmore Central (2-0) 9
  10. Yutan (1-1) 10
    Dropped Out
    None
    OLI
    Amherst (1-1)
    Kearney Catholic (2-0)
    Mitchell (2-0)
    North Bend Central (2-0)
    WIlber-Clatonia (1-1)
    Note: Ponca is also (2-0)

Comments: Norfolk Catholic moves to No. 1 after a 31-14 win over preseason No. 1 Ord. Kearney Catholic and Mitchell are ratings worthy and are waiting for one of the 10 to slip up.

Editor’s Note: The Top Performer idea is no more, but will replaced by something reimagined and probably will have more to do with recruiting. It’s kind of crazy when what was by far your most accessed and retweeted social media message from five years ago no longer has a place for consumers. Adapt or die, as they say. Still unable to get back out to a stadium due to circumstances beyond my control, but being able to watch multiple games at the same time on Friday nights via streaming some benefits. If you have been streamed somewhere in Class A, I have seen some of you. Please check out what they have going on for free streaming at Hudl. There’s still nothing better than being on the sidelines.
