2023 SUMMER SNAPSHOT

LINCOLN SOUTHEAST KNIGHTS (5-5)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Nine-time state champion Lincoln Southeast has not won a playoff game since 2020, which is something that will not sit well with one of the top programs in state history. QB Owen Baxter (1,540 total yards, 18 TD’s) returns to run the offense after seeing some success as a junior. Experienced junior RB/LB Cash Buettenback (328 rushing, 3 TD’s; 69 tackles, INT) is one of the names to watch in Class A and could emerge to one of the most sought after prospects in Lincoln over the next few years. Cooper Johnson (6’6/300) returns as one of the top linemen in the state, while junior Dane Newman (6’3/270) will also boost the front for the Knights.

Junior DL Pierre Allen Jr. (75 tackles, 2 sacks, INT) is a name to remember for future reference in the recruiting world. Lincoln Southeast’s defensive backfield will be boosted by Lincoln High transfer Donald DeFrand Jr., who is considered one of the top defensive back prospects in the state. Amongst a sleuth of young prospects to watch are sophomore WR Nate Appleget (6’2/195), junior LB Zayvion Campbell (6’3/200), and sophomore ATH Dallas Washington (6’1/195). The Knights have the pieces in place to become the top team in Lincoln this fall, but will once again have to navigate a tricky district.

SEASON OPENER: August 24 at Elkhorn South

LINCOLN SOUTHWEST SILVER HAWKS (8-3)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Lincoln Southwest got on a roll last season, winning all but one district game en route to the state playoffs after a one-year absence. The Silver Hawks relied on senior leadership to take the next step forward as a program. Sophomore QB Ryan Manning is a name to watch for the future. In the backfield, Tanner Novosad (217 rushing, TD) and junior Jace Erickson (199 rushing, 3 TD’s) have huge huge . Junior WR Jackson Carpenter (324 receiving, 23.1 ypc, 4 TD’s) is one of the top prospects in the state in the Class of 2025. Noah Hansen (5’11/260) is back up front for the Silver Hawks.

LB Titus Miron (and LB Trent Buda will become the senior leaders on defense. A strong junior class will boost the Southwest defense, including DB Griffin Semrad (52 tackles), DL Cole Erickson (33 tackles, 3 TFLi, and DB Landon Kelley (21 tackles, 3 INT’s). If new leaders are able to step into their roles, Lincoln Southwest will be a playoff threat once again out of District A-6.

SEASON OPENER: Week 1 vs. Lincoln High (Stadium TBD)

MILLARD NORTH MUSTANGS (4-5)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Millard North’s crop of young talent was unable to get it back into postseason play in 2022, with the Mustangs looking to get back into postseason play for the first time since 2020. Evan Hansen (697 passing, 6 TD’s; 653 rushing, 8 TD’s) emerged at quarterback in 2022. Nebraska commit Caden VerMaas (892 total yards, 11 TD’s) made a lot of things happen with the ball in his hands. Junior Colin Bogatz (335 rushing, 2 TD’s) and junior Marcus Hankins will be among the names to watch in deep backfield. Junior TE/DL Pierce Mooberry (347 receiving, 4 TD’s; 38 tackles, 6 TFL, 4 sacks) will receiving heavy recruiting interest for the Mustangs. Expect Caleb Klein (6’3/270) and Christian Coffman (6’2/250) to lead the effort up front. After missing most of the season due to injury,

LB Will Granger (6’4/210) returns as one of the top linebackers in the state. DL Henry Rehberg (6’3/250), LB Spencer Phillips (50 tackles, 11 TFL), LB Rocky Chavez (36 tackles, 9 TFL) and DB Desmond Dhaenens (3 INT’s) are juniors to watch. With college talent all over the roster, the future is bright for the Mustangs. A lofty preseason ranking appears imminent for the Mustangs.

MILLARD WEST WILDCATS (6-4)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Despite a 1-3 start, two-time state champion Millard West went to the playoffs last season after a one-year absence by winning all five games within District A-6. QB Brody Peterson (954 total yards, 11 TD’s) is back to lead the offense. Eyston Behrens could emerge out of the backfield for Millard West. Jackson Williams (711 receiving yards, 11 total TD’s) is arguably the most underrated player in the state when it comes to recruiting, while Bobby Joseph (412 total yards, 4 TD’s) will help boost the offense. Tyler Thaden (6’5/270) and Wyatt Goodlett (6’1/265) are expected to be the leaders up front for the Wildcats.

OMAHA BRYAN BEARS (3-6)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Searching for its first playoff appearance since 2007, Omaha Bryan took major strides forward last season. Expect the Bears to find some wins on the schedule again in 2023 with four of the first five games coming against teams that finished below .500. Jeremiah Gorham (1,221 total yards, 12 TD’s) and Braylon Rogers (302 rushing, TD) give the Bears a pair of athletic playmakers. Omaha Bryan’s offensive front will be boosted by junior Kelvin Washington (6’3/320), a transfer from Omaha Benson.

LB Mi’Khel Thomas (23 tackles, 3 TFL) and MyKerr Ross (19 tackles) are expected to join Gorham and Rogers as leaders on defense., while LB Johnathan Clemons is another senior to watch. SOUTH SIOUX CITY CARDINALS (2-7)

WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: South Sioux City was involved with the highest scoring game of the 2022 season in Class A, a thrilling 67-60 win over Omaha South. Junior QB/LB D.J. Helms (1,061 total yards, 14 TD’s; 32 tackles, 10 TFL, 5 sacks) is back to run the offense and will be a three-year starter. A high-profile transfer before last season allowed junior Tony Palmer (759 rushing, 13 TD’s; 43 tackles, 3.5 TFL to emerge. WR Richard Stewart (319 receiving, 4 TD’s) and Tate Albertson (200 receiving, 3 TD’s) give the Cardinals viable options in the passing game.

Adam Hamilton (44 tackles, 3 INT’s) and Andrew Ortiz (26 tackles) are expected to emerge as the leaders on defense, while a junior to watch is RB/LB Xander Ardley Jr. ( 27 tackles, 3.5 TFL).
