2023 SUMMER SNAPSHOT

ELKHORN SOUTH STORM (10-1)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: After rolling through the regular season and first round in emphatic fashion in 2022, Elkhorn South ran into a one of the few teams in Class A that could match it up front in the postseason. In the quarterfinals in an old-fashioned slugfest, Creighton Prep outlasted the Storm 10-3 to end the season quicker than many expected. Carson Rauner (2,070 total yards, 17 TD’s) returns at quarterback for the Storm and comes to the season as one of the most underrated prospects in the Class of 2024 in Nebraska. RB Brady Bousquet (364 rushing, 5 TD’s) has huge shoes to fill but has more experience than most backups, while strong junior class will benefit the Storm on offense. TE Ethan Duda (6’5/205) gives Rauner a big target in the passing game. Having Nebraska commit Ashton Murphy (6’5/245) and Ben Gustafson (6’8/270) up front will be crucial for the Storm. A name to watch for a huge season on the defensive line is Henry Prochazka (6’4/225; 23 tackles, 4 TFL). LB Memphis Hurley along with DB Ty Nielsen and DB/K Riley Hodges (55/59 PAT; 3/3 FG, 36 Long) will provide further leadership on defense. Expect the Storm to be among the top five teams in the preseason polls in August.
SEASON OPENER: August 24 vs. Lincoln Southeast

FREMONT TIGERS (2-7)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: A goal line stand as time expired in the season opener at home against rival Columbus was a tough pill to swallow for the Tigers, who fought the injury bug all season long while limping to two victories. Fremont was able to gain experience at the back end of the season with senior QB Michael Dalton earning valuable reps along with junior RB Brooks Eyler (672 rushing, 6 TD’s). Fremont’s strength will be up front, led by Dakota Coon (6’2/265), Andrew Lockhart (6’2/270), junior Jackson Jones (6’4/285), and sophomore Preston Wagner (6’1/250). Nathan Jones (34 tackles, INT) leads the returnees on defense, while a junior to watch is Caden Wray. Fremont will be looking to get back into the postseason after a two-year absence, with its last appearance in 2020 also being its last playoff victory.
SEASON OPENER: August 18 at Columbus

GRAND ISLAND ISLANDERS (9-3)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: In 2022, a senior-led roster pushed the Islanders to wins over North Platte, Kearney, and Omaha North (x2) in a semifinal run. A new quarterback will need to emerge for Grand Island in 2023, but having Caleb Richardson (762 rushing, 7 TD’s) returning in the backfield will be crucial to the success for the Islanders . It may or may not come in 2023, but a name to story in the memory bank for future reference is sophomore RB Nelsyn Wheeler. OL/DL Reid Kelly (6’4/250) and Kaden Roberson (6’3/215) are the top returnees up front for the Islanders. LB Justyce Hostetler (103 tackles, 6 TFL, 4 sacks) will be the unquestioned leader on defense for the Islanders. LB Roady Mintken (6’1/205) and Ryan Coslor (34 tackles, INT) are others on defense who will be required to step into leadership roles. Grand Island was a major headache to many of the top teams in Class A in 2022. Expect more of the same again this time around.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 vs. North Platte

OMAHA NORTH VIKINGS (6-4)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Junior QB Sebastian Circo (1,307 passing, 16 TD’s) enters the season with a handful of Power 5 offers and will be worth the price of admission. Throw size out of the equation with Circo. A new running back will need to step with with huge shoes to fill. Circo will have plenty of options in the passing game, including Ke’Vaughn Shannon (298 receiving, 4 TD’s) , junior Titan Glassman (447 receiving, TD), and sophomore Champ Davis (218 receiving, 4 TD’s). Up front, DeAndre Harper (6’6/300) is one of the top offensive line prospects in the metro. On defense, junior Nebraska commit Tyson Terry (54 tackles, 11 TFL, 4 sacks) and S Marious Henderson (6’3/320; 26 tackles, 5.5 TFL) lead an impressive front. LB Nolan Venner (46 tackles, 2.5 TFL), Mykel Johnson (53 tackles, INT ), and Donovan Jones (42 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2 INT’s) will provide senior leadership on defense, while a sophomore to watch is LB B.J. Louis (6’1/210; 42 tackles, 3.5 sacks). Omaha North will likely be another team in the mix for the top five heading into the 2023 season.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 at Bellevue West

OMAHA NORTHWEST HUSKIES (0-9)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Omaha Northwest is a program than remains under transition and will have a new head coach in 2023. In order to be fair to the program, more work will be done in the summer to get a better grasp on how the Huskies will line up this season. Jason Fuller was named as head coach in late January. A prospect to watch off the top will be TE/DL Evan Doupnik (6’2/215). Omaha Northwest’s last playoff appearance in 2008 was its last since 1988.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 vs. Omaha Central
