2022 SUMMER SNAPSHOT
OMAHA BENSON BUNNIES (3-6)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: In order to be fair to the Omaha Benson program, not a lot is known about how the Bunnies will line up for the 2023 season at this time. Elliott Zadow will take over for Terrence Mackey, who left for the head coaching job at Omaha Central. A lot more will be known about Omaha Benson in August before the regular season kicks off. The Bunnies are in search of their first playoff appearance since 2009.
SEASON OPENER: Week 1 at Lincoln North Star (Stadium/Date TBD)
OMAHA BURKE BULLDOGS (2-7)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: James Patterson will take over the helm of the Bulldogs after spending five seasons at Omaha South, compiling an 11-25 record. Patterson won four games at Omaha South on two occasions, which is the most success its program has had in years. The cupboard will not be bare for Patterson in his first season as Burke continues its rebuild. The transfer of junior QB Nate Collins (317 passing, 2 TD’s at Omaha North) will be a major boost for the offense, Jamari Allen (184 rushing, 2 TD’s) is the leading returning rusher on the roster. Junior Marcus Buchanan (186 receiving, TD) leads the receivers. Defensively, Logan Nielsen (31 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and junior Leland Faughn (6’4/265; 15 tackles, 6 TFL) are ones to watch. Expect Omaha Burke to be a much improved team in 2023 and it works towards getting back to the state playoff hunt.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 at Gretna
OMAHA CENTRAL EAGLES (1-8)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Fans of the original Omaha high school can rest easy. Help is on the way. Terrence Mackey comes over from Omaha Benson and brings with him an instant injection of talent. The big man on campus for the Eagles is Power 5 prospect Caleb Pyfrom (6’6/300), who is regarded as the top offensive line recruit in the state. After taking his lumps as freshman while showing the toughness of an upperclassmen, QB B.J. Newsome (790 passing, 3 TD’s) will have plenty of options on offense in 2023. Holdover Andrew Brown (477 receiving, TD) will be part of a rejuvenated receiving corps. Two juniors to watch are TE/DL Alijah Wayne and TE/LB Ike Ackerman. From there, it gets interesting. Among the transfers from Benson are WR D.J. Sterling (345 receiving, 3 TD’s), sophomore WR Avry Harris (229 receiving, 3 TD’s), WR DaShawn Prince (173 receiving), LB Kevon Newsome (130 tackles, 10 TFL, 3 INT’s), and sophomore DL Jerry Jackson Jr. (5’11/275). Omaha Central will be looking for its first playoff berth since 2015.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 at Omaha Northwest
OMAHA CREIGHTON PREP JUNIOR JAYS (8-4)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: Creighton Prep’s schedule made its record deceiving a year ago, but the Junior Jays recovered in district play and eventual knocked off previously unbeaten Elkhorn South in the Class A quarterfinals. Junior Tony Coniglio (372 passing, TD) was one of five quarterbacks who took snaps a year ago and is the only one remaining on the roster. Coniglio has some talent. Tight end Michael Burt (6’6/230; 187 receiving, TD) exploded onto the recruiting scene with four Power 5 this summer. Zac McLeay (69 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2 INT’s) and LB Ryan Uhl (24 tackles) are back as the leaders on defense. A junior to watch up front is Aubrey Ross Jr. (6’3/260). There will be a lot more lingering questions than answers heading into 2023. Gone is arguably the best offensive line in the state of Nebraska. If there is a program that understands how to reload and usually has the participation numbers to do so, it’s definitely Creighton Prep.
SEASON OPENER: August 25 at Omaha Westside
PAPILLION-LA VISTA MONARCHS (4-6)
WHAT WE THINK WE MIGHT KNOW: If you are looking for a team that has a chance to sneak into the preseason Top 10 and want to buy in early, Papillion-La Vista has a lot to like coming back in 2023. Experience at quarterback will be key with Tavien Pirtle (1,434 passing, 16 TD’s) back to run the offense. A pair of options out of the backfield will boost the offense, including Payton Prestito (1,178 rushing, 10 TD’s) and Jordan Barrientos (513 rushing, 3 TD’s). Pittsburgh TE commit Eric Ingwerson (6’7/235; 175 receiving, 4 TD’s; 51 tackles, 11 TFL; 4.5 sacks) and junior Isaac Pamaran (450 receiving, 5 TD’s; 82 tackles) will be useful in the passing game. The Monarchs are strong up front. Junior Garin Maley (6’6/250) is one of the most underrated in the state for his class, while Dallas Hamilton (6’2/270) will also be a force. Pamaran was the leading tackler a year ago on defense, Trent Lavicky (26 tackles, 3 INT’s), and junior Kale Johnson (66 tackles) will be the ones to watch on defense. This is definitely a team to keep an eye on this fall.
