Comments: Nebraska HS Football did a terrible job in the preseason ranking these teams. The main question for Bennington entering the season after winning the whole thing in 2021 was whether it could replace a 3,000-yard rusher. The answer was an emphatic YES. There were a lot of fans of Omaha Gross in the preseason, but the Cougars were ninth according to NEBHSFB. Absurd. Lessons learned. A lesson not learned was by the NSAA concerning the debacle of Omaha Buena Vista and Lincoln Northwest cancelling their varsity seasons. We get to do it all over again in 2023 as Lincoln Standing Bear and Gretna East join the fray. The chance of both playing a full varsity season is slim to none, and the NSAA should have acted on this already. But, you know. No new high school should be expected to field a varsity team under any circumstances. If your district is putting seniors in a new high school, perhaps you should look at new school board members for your district. It’s not a national travesty that whole bunch of Class B schools had eight games and some missed out on a Homecoming game. It’s just annoying. Another issue is allowing Hastings to play down to Class B despite being a Class A school, basically screwing up the scheduling process for everybody else because there are an uneven amount of teams in each district. They could make this so much easier on themselves.
Class C-1
1. Pierce (13-0)
2. Aurora (12-1)
3. Boone Central (9-3)
4. Ashland-Greenwood (9-2)
5. Adams Central (9-3)
6. McCook (10-1)
7. Columbus Lakeview (8-3)
8. Lincoln Christian (8-3)
9. Omaha Roncalli (7-3)
10. Wahoo (6-4)
Teams to Watch in 2023: Auburn (6-4), Platteview (6-4), Ogallala (4-5)
Comments: No surprise at the end of the day as Aurora and Pierce were No. 1 and No. 2 in the preseason with Pierce claiming the state championship after just as impressive of a season as the top-ranked Huskies. Aurora really did not have All-State running back Carlos Collazo at full strength in the final, but Pierce took advantage of the best player outside of Class A in the state of Nebraska in Ben Brahmer. Boone Central and Ashland-Greenwood were both in the preseason Top 5. Adams Central, Columbus Lakeview, Omaha Roncalli, and Wahoo also finished in the Top 10 after being there in the preseason. A lot of pundits were high on McCook, and NEBHSFB definitely missed the mark on the Bison in the preseason. Lincoln Christian’s win over Lincoln Lutheran early in the season opened some eyes around the state.
Class C-2
1.Norfolk Catholic (13-0)
2. Ord (10-2)
3. Hartington Cedar Catholic (9-4)
4. Battle Creek (9-3)
5. Hastings St. Cecilia (10-1)
6. Malcolm (10-1)
7. Oakland-Craig (8-3)
8. Lincoln Lutheran (7-4)
9. Wahoo Neumann (8-2)
10. Yutan (6-4)
Teams to Watch in 2023; Mitchell (8-2), Fillmore Central (7-3), North Bend Central (4-5)
Comments: Norfolk Catholic went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in Class C-2, eventually winning its Nebraska leading 11th state championship in 2022. Ord finished where it started in the preseason at No. 2 with Battle Creek, Hastings St. Cecilia, Lincoln Lutheran, and Yutan all finishing in the Top 10 after being there in the preseason. The biggest surprise of the season was Malcolm, thanks to the stellar play of quarterback Hayden Frank. There were a few teams that had trouble fielding an 11-man team at times this season in C-2 and a few private schools that were an injury or two away from a big issue. Perhaps it’s time to raise the Eight-Man cutoff numbers a little higher (not that much higher) to avoid some potential issues. It’s hard to ask schools to drop down if they want to play 11-man, however.
