Official Game Stats

Norfolk Catholic (13-0) 23, Hartington Cedar Catholic (9-4) 0

Norfolk Catholic ran the table as the wire-to-wire No. 1 in Class C-2, capped off by winning the state championship over Hartington Cedar Catholic 23-0 on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

It could not got off to a worse start for the underdogs who were facing a team searching for its 11th state championship and the all-time wins leader in Norfolk Catholic coach Jeff Bellar (393 wins). Cedar Catholic fumbled the opening kickoff, which was recovered by Max Hammond at the 14-yard line. After a booth review to confirm the fumble, Hammond kicked a 29-yard field goal to open the scoring for Norfolk Catholic.

All-State running back Karter Kerkman battled a hamstring issue throughout. Kerkman entered the game with 1,513 yards and 27 touchdowns on the season and finished with 67 tough yards and a second quarter touchdown run in a gutsy performance fighting through his injury. Kanyon Talton performed well finishing with 67 yards and a touchdown while Brandon Kollars added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

In the first meeting of the season on October 21, Cedar Catholic could only muster 192 total yards in a 14-0 loss. Moving the ball in the championship game proved to be equally as difficult. Thanks to a 39-yard burst by Carson Arens and a pass interference penalty, the Trojans drove into the red zone with under six minutes remaining in the second quarter. On fourth down, Triston Hoesing knocked away a pass attempt to give the ball back to the favorites.

Norfolk Catholic allowed just 147 yards in the victory. Iowa pledge Kade Pieper led the defense with seven tackles and two sacks.

Cedar Catholic’s defense was led by Jaelen Lammers, who finished with 19 tackles. Jay Steffen also held his own up front against stiff competition.
