Nebraska commit Ben Brahmer made his fourth straight appearance in the state championship game count. The senior caught 11 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns while also picking off a pass on defense in a 42-14 victory over Aurora to cap off a record setting career for the Bluejays. It was the second title in three seasons for Pierce and fifth in school history.
Brahmer and quarterback Abram Scholting hooked up often in the victory. Brahmer finished his career as the Class C-1 leader in career yards and touchdowns and also set the single season yardage and touchdown record this season for Pierce. His final totals for the season were 80 catches for 1,523 yards and 21 touchdowns. For good measure, Brahmer finished with the most postseason yards in Class C-1 history.
Scholting completed 14 of 18 passes for 270 yards and the three touchdowns to Brahmer. Junior Keenan Valverde rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bluejays.
With 10:38 remaining, Pierce dipped into its bag of tricks and came through when Colby Anderson hit Addison Croghan on a 23-yard touchdown on a halfback pass to give Pierce a 26-14 lead. Valverde scored his second touchdown run of the game from four yards out to further solidify the outcome.
Aurora quarterback Drew Knust gave his team a boost in the first quarter, rushing for 42 yards and got the Huskies on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:44 remaining.
Carlos Collazo was not at 100 percent in the loss, finishing with 94 rushing yards and a touchdown. For the season, Collazo finished with 2,024 yards and 32 touchdowns. Knust led the Aurora defense with 13 tackles, while Jack Allen chipped in with nine. Aurora has now lost in the state championship game in three straight seasons.
