Tristan Alvano booted five field goals, including a 45-yard blast as time expired, as Omaha Westside defeated Gretna 43-41 to win the Class A state championship. Omaha Westside won its fourth title in school history and its second in three seasons.
Having one of the top kickers in the national nearly paid off for Omaha Westside as Alvano booted field goals of 44, 50, 28, and 42 yards over the second, third, and fourth quarters to provide the only points for his team after the first quarter before hitting the game winner.
Gretna quarterback Zane Flores saved his best for last, throwing for 414 yards and three touchdowns Gretna had 75 yards to cover with 2:34 to do it, trailing 40-34. On second down, Oklahoma State commit Flores hit Blayke Moore on a 54-yard gain to put the Dragons into the red zone. On the next play, Isaiah Weber scored from 14 yards out to tie the game before Cameron Bothwell booted the point after to give his team a one-point lead.
Westside then had 1:49 and 58 yards to answer. Quarterback Anthony Rezac drove Westside down to the 35-yard line with four seconds left to set up Alvano’s field goal . The junior would finish with 420 total yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
In what turned out to be an eventful first quarter, it took Omaha Westside 1:26 to do what it could not do last year in a 7-3 loss to Gretna in the state title game. After not reaching the end zone last season, Anthony Rezac scored on a 31-yard run to give his team a 7-0 lead early on.
Junior Jahmez Ross tacked on a touchdown to let Westside regain the lead before elite level junior Caleb Benning set up another score with an interception. Anthony Rezac hit Teddy Rezac on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 3:14 left in the first quarter to take a 21-7 advantage. Benning intercepted Flores twice in the first quarter after returning from injury for the final and caught eight passes in the first half as Westside was able to successfully move the football.
Flores struck immediately in response with an 80-yard dagger to Blayke Moore to make it 21-14. Another Benning interception followed Kenyan Cotton‘s 64-yard scoring hookup with Anthony Rezac to give Westside another 14-point lead. Anthony Rezac finished with 255 total yards in the first half for Westside.
Flores connected with Ethan Stuhr for this third touchdown pass of the night with :28 remaining before halftime to bring Gretna to 31-21 at halftime. Flores, the leading career passer in Nebraska history, threw for 221 yards in the first half.
Benning caught 14 passes for 103 yards to lead Westside’s receivers. Sophomore Christian Jones led the defense with eight tackles.
