Preview: Winners of five Class B state titles, Omaha Skutt finished 6-3 in the regular season before going on a run in the playoffs before falling in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Aurora. Wyatt Archer, Joe Connolly, junior James Sengstock, and Brandt Pickrell (6’3/225) are part of an outstanding receiving corps for the Skyhawks. Archer, Pickrell, and Logan Abels are the top returnees on defense. Keep an eye on junior QB Bennett Turman. Skutt Catholic will enter the 2022 season as one of the favorites in Class B.

2. Plattsmouth Blue Devils
Head Coach: Curtis Larsen
2021 Record: 10-1 (Off. Avg: 35.3 | Def. Avg: 12.8)
Postseason: Lost to Omaha Skutt Catholic in Class B quarterfinals, 20-10.
2022 Schedule: 8/26 @ Blair; 9/2 vs. Bennington; 9/9 vs. Lincoln Northwest; 9/16 @ Mount Michael; 9/23 @ Beatrice; 9/30 vs. Omaha Gross Catholic; 10/7 @ Omaha Buena Vista; 10/14 vs. Omaha Skutt Catholic; 10/20 @ Ralston
Preview: Coming off three straight playoff appearances, the Blue Devils got off to a 10-0 start before falling to a resurgent Omaha Skutt in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Curtis Larsen replaces the retiring Bob Dzuris, who spent 15 seasons at Plattsmouth. Most of the roster is gone from last season, with RB Ethan Walker the most productive offensive player coming back. DB T.J. Fitzpatrick led the state with 9 INT’s last season. Junior OL/DL Dylan Eby (6’3/290) is a prospect to watch after putting together fantastic sophomore tape.

3. Omaha Gross Catholic Cougars
Head Coach: Tom Van Haute
2021 Record: 4-6 (Off. Avg: 28.4 | Def. Avg: 29.8)
Postseason: Lost to Plattsmouth in Class B first round, 19-13.

Preview: Class B state champion in 2012, Gross Catholic is on a string of three straight playoff appearances. QB Colby Duncan is back to lead the offense after a solid junior season with RB/LB Jake Garcia also returning in the backfield for the Cougars. A strong front includes Carson Almgren and Salvatore Nacarelli. It’s appearance outside the Preseason Top 10 is perhaps harsh.

4. Ralston Rams
Head Coach: Tyler Zahn
2021 Record: 3-6 (Off. Avg: 23.6 | Def. Avg: 30.0)
Postseason: Has not qualified for the postseason since 2018.

QB Harrison Acklie is back to lead the Rams on offense, with Brandon Cavender and Hudson Holloway back as the leader on defense. With some winnable games to kick off the 2022 season including two games against new programs, Ralston has a chance to get on a roll early.
